"We have signed an investment agreement with the town of Aleksandrow Lodzki and the local special economic zone," Malgorzata Mejer told AFP.

"We intend to invest 50 million dollars (37.6 million euros) between now and 2012 in the project to build a cosmetics factory, and to create 300 jobs," she said.

Construction work is expected to begin before the end this year, with the factory due to come onstream by 2009.

Procter and Gamble entered the Polish market in 1990, and since then has invested more than 200 million dollars in the central European country, which joined the EU in 2004.

Most of its investment has gone into a nappy factory in Warsaw and developing a product distribution network.
