UAL’s Fashion Space Gallery in London is inviting fashion, textiles, footwear and jewellery designers with an interest in experimental approaches to apply for its 2020 residency programme.

The Design Residency supports experimental designers working within fashion and their journey through collaborative and multidisciplinary projects.

This year’s theme is ‘Liquid Solidarities’, inviting applicants to explore how we live and work with one another as well as with the smart environments that surround our lives.

“Diverse communities are flourishing through online platforms, from anonymous social activists and trolls to virtual festivals and distributed micro-communities. We invite designers to propose ideas that explore design’s ability to affect, influence, and embody the languages of care, forms of activism, and codes of belonging that are emerging in this data economy,” said Fashion Space Gallery.

The selected resident will be invited to explore their project further, assembling their own team to bring together the expertise of product, graphic and digital designers, artists, engineers and even scientists to produce impactful new work over a five-month period. The winner will be awarded £500 for research and development, as well as access to design and fabrication studios at the London College of Fashion.

The residency will conclude with a Work in Progress presentation at Arcade East in Hackney in September.

Submissions close on 29 March.
