Burberry is surprising passengers at Heathrow this summer with a life-size hot air balloon and pop-up store at the airport’s Terminal 2 departure lounge. The installation celebrates the magic of flying.

Standing over 15 metres tall, the Burberry Balloon is inspired by the real-life achievements of Air Commodore Edward Maitland, Auguste Gaudron and Charles Turner, who flew the ‘Mammoth’ balloon from Crystal Palace, London to Meeki Derevi, Russia in 1908. According to Burberry, Maitland wore Burberry gabardine suiting during the flight to protect himself from the severe hardships of cold at high altitude.

The installation features dedicated iPads and Burberry post boxes, allowing travellers to create and print their own Burberry postcards and send them to friends and family. Additionally, a pop-up store showcasing the brand’s DK88 collection accompanies the installation and invites shoppers to discover the line, named after the house code for its signature honey-coloured gabardine.

The handbags come in top handle, satchel and luggage-inspired styles for both men and women, each featuring Burberry’s exclusive new Trench Leather.

The Burberry balloon installation will be at Heathrow until 7 August before moving to a secret location as part of a world tour.
