L’Oréal and Stella McCartney win the ‘Battle of the Nudes’

In spite of a legal filing by Irish brand Nude Brands, the High Court in London authorized the release of Stella McCartney’s new perfume, StellaNude, which has been developed by L’Oréal.

The judge, Christopher Floyd, refused an injunction to Nude brands which claimed an illegal copy of a trademark of Nude Brands, a company founded by the wife of singer Bono. Nude Brands claimed the exclusive rights to the word NUDE when it was written in capital letters.

STELLANUDE should therefore be on sale from September onwards, Mr Justice Floyd stating that, "in this particular case, the likely damage to Stella McCartney Limited and L'Oréal if an injunction is wrongly granted outweighs the damage to Nude Brands Limited if it is refused.''

One thing is sure though, the “duel” between the daughter of former Beatle Paul McCartney and the wife of U2 frontman Bono has already ensured that the perfume will be released into the market with a great deal of media attention, the British press having been extensively covering the case since the beginning.
