Liverpool One mall gets new leader

Property giant Grosvenor has named a new leader for its hugely successful Liverpool One mall with Chris Jukes taking over as Director at the start of next month.

Chris Jukes - Grosvenor

He succeeds Alison Clegg who’s retiring next year after leading the destination mall for 15 years. She’ll work with Jukes until March.

Jukes is a Grosvenor veteran having joined the business in 2005. He’s held various finance positions in Grosvenor Property UK and the broader business. He’s currently responsible for finance in the UK property operation’s Development and Investment teams, which include Liverpool One.

Clegg has worked for Grosvenor for 15 years, joining in March 2007, ahead of the opening of the first phase of Liverpool One and has been involved with the shopping centre since its opening the following year. Most recently she led it through the pandemic and its “significant” bounce-back.

While Grosvenor owns only a 23% stake in the mall, it manages the destination on behalf of all its investors and it seems to be doing a good job. Since opening in 2008, the 1.65 million sq ft regeneration scheme “has become one of the dominant retail and entertainment destinations in the UK, attracting c29 million visitors annually”.

It has seen some major names signing up of late, most recently welcoming Charlotte Tilbury’s first boutique outside London and Gravity’s new flagship entertainment venue. Inditex has also opened stores there for multiple brands.

The mall’s evolving offer has driven sales up 20.9% year-to-date compared to 2019.

Jukes said the opportunity to lead it “is a hugely galvanising prospect. I joined Grosvenor in 2005 to work on the project, so to return and lead the team into the 15-year anniversary of Liverpool One is very rewarding.

“Whilst the retail sector faces many challenges, well-managed and curated destinations will continue to perform. With Eurovision coming to Liverpool next year, as well as our own milestone, it is set to be an exciting time for the UK’s most sociable city.”
