Hong Kong-based NGO Redress has unveiled its list of 30 semi-finalists for its Redress 2019 Design Award, the world's largest sustainable fashion design competition.

The selected designers were chosen based on their sustainable design efforts meant to tackle the environmental challenges of the fashion industry, including carbon emissions, water pollution, chemical use, over-consumption and waste.

Finalists include designers Abby Gaskin, Damini Mittai, Zsófia Tátrai, Sarah Mayer, Anna Schuster, MD Parvez and Franziska Knitsch, among others.

“If the fashion industry carries on with a business-as-usual linear model, carbon emissions from textile production alone are set to rise by more than 60% by 2030, but these emerging designers give us hope for a future where textile waste is valued, and where responsible design, production and consumption with circularity in mind are the norm," said Dr. Christina Dean, Redress founder and board chair.

The 30 semi-finalists will now be reviewed by the Redress international judging panel and narrowed down to a final shortlist of 10 finalists. The 10 will then travel to Hong Kong later this year to participate in a week of sustainable fashion education and design challenges, and to show their collections during a live grand final at Centrestage, Hong Kong.
