UK footfall down in April

Footfall in the UK fell by 0.8% year-on-year in April, according to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium.

This is down from March's 0.2% rise, and below the -0.3% three-month average. Footfall on the high street was down a nominal 0.1%, while shopping centres saw a 3% decline in footfall.

Out-of-town locations did better, with footfall up 0.5%, but that is still the lowest figure since September 2014. The national town vacancy rate in April was 10.2%, down from the 10.4% reported in January this year.

Helen Dickinson, British Retail Consortium Director General, said: "The stubbornness of the footfall figures may be explained by the similar obstinance in the vacancy rate figure. Since the BRC started collecting these figures shop vacancy rates have never fallen below 10%. We've long argued that vacant units put shoppers off visiting an area and the long term trend in these numbers bear that out."
