Musician Joe Strummer was a massive football fan so the Joe Strummer Foundation has appropriately launched a charity-supporting soccer kit JSF FC with sportswear giant Umbro before the 2020 World Cup kicks off in late November.

The lead singer of punk band The Clash died in 2002 and the Foundation aims to improve social mobility.

Under the banner ‘Strummer United’, the signature kit aims to “incubate the culture clash of football and music in a World Cup year”.

The underlying project is “to promote equality, inclusivity, and diversity, whilst providing opportunities to young people and raising funds for the Foundation and the projects it supports”.

JSF FC will also bring together young people from projects it supports in London to produce a short film, which will include getting “some of Joe's nearest and dearest involved as well as the extended JSF family”.

So the project invites the young people from the ‘Avenues Youth Project’ to collaboratively create and record an alternative World Cup 22 song and video”.

The focal point will be the jersey Umbro has crafted for the charity which launched last month.

“The Clash’s magnanimous treatment of their fans became part of their legend. [The] abiding love of football and music personifies how football and rock ’n’ roll were the traditional escape for young men from the drab ennui of everyday life UK life in that age”, said Umbro.
